How Much Does It Cost to Ship a Pet from Canada to Mexico?
Mexico asks for less paperwork than any other international destination from Canada, and the reason is unusual: there is none. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency states that a health certificate for dogs and cats from Canada is no longer needed to enter Mexico. No export certificate, no CFIA endorsement fee, no import permit. Mexico inspects the animal on arrival rather than inspecting a document before departure. What you are paying for is the crate and the flight.
What it costs, line by line
| Cost | Amount | Who charges it |
|---|---|---|
| CFIA export certification | Not required for Mexico | CFIA |
| Import permit | None | SENASICA |
| Quarantine | None as standard | SENASICA |
| Arrival inspection | No published fee | Agricultural Health Inspection Office |
| Parasite treatment, if required on arrival | At the owner’s expense | Agricultural Health Inspection Office |
| IATA crate | CAD $80 to $340 at retail depending on size | Retail |
| Airline freight | Quoted per booking | Airline |
| Vet examination | Set by your clinic | Your veterinarian |
Mexico’s requirement is an inspection, not a document. Your pet is presented to the Agricultural Health Inspection Office on arrival and examined for infectious disease, external parasites and wounds. If ectoparasites are found, the animal is treated at the owner’s expense and held at the inspection office until the result is confirmed. A clean, recently treated animal clears quickly. This is the one route where what you spend at the vet before departure is about passing an inspection rather than completing a form.
How flight pricing works on this route
Live animal freight from Canada is priced per booking rather than from a rate card. Chargeable weight is whichever is greater, the actual weight of pet and crate together, or a volume figure taken from the crate’s dimensions, so for most dogs the crate decides the price. Send us the two cities and the crate size and we will quote the real rate.
What is not included here
Your vet sets their own fees. The examination, any vaccination and any parasite treatment before departure are priced by your clinic and vary by province. Boarding, and domestic travel to the departure airport, also sit outside these figures.
What moves the price
Crate size drives the flight cost, as on every route. After that it is the season, whether the routing is direct, and which Canadian city you leave from. Mexico is far enough that in-cabin travel is worth checking for a small pet, because it removes the cargo cost entirely.
Figures and sources
Checked September 2026. The requirement position above comes from the CFIA page on exporting dogs and cats to Mexico. Government rules change, and this one changed recently, so check the source before you book.
