Safe and Reliable Pet Transport in Victoria, BC
Pet transportation in Victoria, British Columbia requires careful planning due to ferry connections, island geography, and limited direct flight options compared to mainland hubs.
Pet Travel Advisors coordinates air and ground pet transportation to and from Victoria while accounting for ferry schedules, airline pet policies, and destination-specific requirements. We regularly plan relocations through Victoria International Airport (YYJ) and coordinate mainland connections when routing, aircraft type, or international travel makes this necessary.

Nearest Airport In Victoria With Pet Services:
Victoria International Airport (YYJ) Location: Sidney, British Columbia, about 25 km north of downtown Victoria. Victoria International Airport provides essential pet travel support for domestic flights, with some international travel options available. For international relocations involving more complex needs, YYJ frequently coordinates through connections at larger Canadian hubs like Vancouver International (YVR) to ensure pets reach their destinations safely and comfortably.
Pet Relief Areas:
YYJ has designated pet relief areas outside the terminal, equipped with waste disposal bins and seating nearby. These areas are convenient for pre-flight breaks and post-arrival relief.
Who actually handles your pet at YYJ
Air Canada Cargo runs the AC Animals product out of 1740 Convair Place, North Saanich. Read the two sets of hours carefully here, because they are not the same. The station is open every day 04:30 to 23:30, but AC Animals screening runs Monday to Friday only, 09:00 to 16:00, and is closed at weekends and on holidays. The animal window is the one that governs. The tender window is narrow: an animal must be tendered no later than three hours before departure and no earlier than four, so it is a one-hour slot rather than a morning. Air Canada does not offer door to door for animals, so somebody has to take the crate to the counter and somebody has to collect it. Bookings inside Canada go direct to Air Canada at least 24 hours ahead; bookings to the United States or overseas have to be placed through a registered IPATA, IATA or ATA agent rather than by the owner. On the paperwork side the CFIA endorsement is in person and by appointment, there are no walk-ins, and the fee is calculated when you book and paid by card at least three days before the appointment, which is why we book that appointment against the flight rather than the move date.
CFIA endorsement and where cargo animals are handled:
There is no separate animal reception centre at this airport. Animals travelling as cargo are dropped off and collected at the cargo handler building, not at the passenger terminals. On the export side, CFIA endorsement of a pet export certificate is by appointment only. Walk-ins are not accepted, the fee is calculated by a CFIA officer, and it has to be paid online at least 3 days before the appointment. It is non-refundable.
Temperature limits and ground handling:
Airlines decide whether a pet flies, not the airport. Carriers refuse an animal in the hold when forecast ground temperatures fall outside their published limits, and they layer seasonal embargoes on top of that. Air Canada Cargo also requires a comfort stop when a connection runs longer than 6 hours, or when an animal is not collected within 4 hours of arrival: the animal goes to a kennel or a veterinary service and those fees fall to the shipper. Between drop-off and loading your pet waits in the cargo handler building rather than a dedicated animal terminal, so the acceptance window and the handler opening hours are what a travel date has to be built around.

Common Local Mistakes to Avoid

Underestimating peak summer travel demand
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Victoria’s mild weather make pet travel easier?
Victoria’s mild coastal climate is one less thing to worry about; there is no long deep-freeze or heat season that forces a pet off most flights. That gives us flexibility to pick the calmest routing and the best departure time from YYJ. We still watch the forecast at the destination, which may be less forgiving.
What airport do Victoria pets fly from?
Most Victoria-area pets depart from Victoria International (YYJ), the main airport for the area. When it does not have the right routing for your dates, we plan around a larger Canadian hub to keep the journey short. We handle the check-in timing and the airline’s crate and booking rules so the airport day stays calm and predictable.
What paperwork does a pet need to fly from Victoria?
Pet travel runs on health paperwork. For a move within Canada a health certificate from a licensed veterinarian is usually enough; for international moves the destination sets the requirements and the export certificate must be endorsed by the CFIA, often on a strict timeline. We map the vet visits and CFIA steps for your Victoria move so nothing expires at the wrong moment.
What kinds of pets do you relocate from Victoria?
We coordinate travel for dogs, cats, birds, small mammals, and select reptiles or exotics from Victoria, whenever airline and destination rules allow. Each species has its own requirements, and snub-nosed breeds and older pets get extra planning around routing and the weather.
Which communities around Victoria do you cover?
We arrange pickups across Victoria and nearby communities like Saanich, Sidney, Esquimalt, and we coordinate pet moves throughout British Columbia and the rest of Canada through our service areas. We also coordinate moves in nearby Vancouver.
What does pet transportation from Victoria cost?
Every Victoria move is priced on its own, because the route, airline fees, your pet’s size and crate, the season, and the destination’s rules all change the total. Tell us where and when, and we’ll put together an estimate: request a quote. For a closer look at what drives the price, see our guide to pet shipping costs in Canada.
