Pet Shipping from Canada to Chile

Chile is not on the CFIA’s list of countries with a negotiated export certificate. There is no Chile form to collect, and no Chilean authority to request one from. What travels with your pet is the Canadian International Health Certificate, endorsed by a CFIA official veterinarian, and Chile asks for it in Spanish as well as in the language of the country it came from.

So the Canadian question on this route is not which form. It is whether the form you have says everything SAG needs it to say, in the language SAG needs it in, inside a validity window of 10 days.

Every Pet Travels Differently

Different destinations, different routes, different challenges.

Because there is no Chile specific certificate to work from, we start by mapping SAG’s conditions onto the Canadian certificate and checking that nothing falls through the gap between them.

  • Destination-Focused Planning

SAG sets the conditions and the CFIA endorses the document that has to carry them. With no Chile specific form in between, we work from both texts and make sure the Canadian certificate records every condition SAG will look for.

  • Smart Routing and Logistics

Routing carries more weight on this route than on most, because the certificate expires 10 days after it is issued and a long connection eats the margin.

  • Personalized Support

Your coordinator holds the endorsement date at the centre of the plan, and books the veterinary work backwards from it.

Pet Shipping from Canada to Chile

Think of a Canadian move to Chile as an alignment problem rather than a waiting problem. Nothing here takes months. There is no rabies titre test and no import permit to apply for. What there is instead is a generic Canadian certificate that has to carry a specific set of Chilean conditions, in Spanish, and be endorsed by the CFIA inside a very short validity window.

  • confirm what applies to your pet and route
  • map out a realistic timeline
  • coordinate vet steps and paperwork
  • support crate readiness and routing

How Pet Shipping from Canada to Chile Works

To keep everything clear, we break the process into steps:

  • Verify requirements and timing

We read the rabies record first, because a first vaccination needs 21 days behind it before your pet can enter Chile.

  • Build your plan and timeline

We book the CFIA appointment early, because the certificate lives 10 days and everything else has to fit inside that.

  • Coordinate vet preparation

We flag the lower bound on the parasite treatment to your veterinarian, and make sure the active ingredient, the dose and the date are all written down.

  • Review documents for consistency

We check the identification number on the certificate against the number in the animal, and confirm the Spanish text is there before the endorsement appointment.

  • Confirm crate readiness and routing

Crate sizing is done against your animal’s own measurements, and we keep the itinerary tight enough that the certificate is still live on landing.

  • Travel and arrival processing

Landing day and the days after it are both covered: what the SAG officer looks at, and what confinement at your destination address means in practice.

To keep your checklist aligned with the latest requirements, we follow SAG guidance on bringing pet dogs, cats and ferrets into Chile. For the Canadian export side, we align documentation with CFIA guidance on export certificates for pets.

There Is No Chile Certificate, and That Changes the Work

On most routes the CFIA publishes a certificate negotiated with the destination country, and your veterinarian fills in the boxes. Chile does not appear on that list. Under C the CFIA names the Cayman Islands and Costa Rica, and nothing else.

Where a destination has no prescribed format, the CFIA’s own guidance is to use the Canadian International Health Certificate if the destination’s requirements can be met with it. That is the route here, and it puts the burden in an unusual place. The form is generic, so somebody has to make sure it records every condition SAG will look for: the identification number, the rabies vaccination date, the broad spectrum internal and external parasite treatment with its active ingredient, dose and date, and the clinical examination inside the 10 days before issue.

Chile also asks that the certificate be issued in Spanish as well as in the official language of the country of origin. For a Canadian file that means an English or French document is not sufficient on its own, and the Spanish text has to exist before the endorsement appointment rather than after it.

  • seasonal capacity into Santiago shifts through the year
  • we settle the itinerary before the certificate is issued
  • a shorter routing leaves more of the 10 days in hand

The 10 Days at Your Chilean Address

What Chile Checks First

There is no quarantine facility on this route and nothing to book. SAG’s condition is confinement at home: once in Chile, the animals must remain in confinement at the private address of destination for a period of 10 days. The same wording appears on both of SAG’s pet entry pages.

What that means in practice is that SAG is confining the animal to an address, not to a country. You need somewhere settled from the day you land, and it needs to be the address on the paperwork. For a family arriving before a lease starts, that is worth solving before the flight is booked rather than after.

Before any appointment is booked, we check two conditions that decide whether the rest of the plan is even possible.

Your pet needs individual permanent identification, a tattoo or a microchip meeting ISO 11784 and 11785, and the number that goes on the certificate has to be the number in the animal. And a first rabies vaccination has to be at least 21 days old on the day of entry, regardless of how old the animal is.

Health Preparation and Documentation

Spacing matters more than paperwork on this route, and one window has a floor as well as a ceiling. The parasite treatment has to sit between 5 and 30 days before the certificate is issued. Early is as wrong as late. The examination sits inside the 10 days before the certificate. The certificate then lives 10 days, with up to 5 more depending on the journey.

The Canadian end adds its own timing. CFIA endorsement is by appointment only, walk-ins are refused, and the fee is calculated by the officer and paid online at least 3 days ahead. That appointment has to land inside the certificate’s short life, which is why we book it before the veterinary work is scheduled rather than after.

RequirementChile, from Canada
How the animal is identifiedA tattoo or a microchip meeting ISO 11784 and 11785. The number on the certificate must be the number in the animal
Rabies vaccineA first vaccination needs 21 days behind it before entry, whatever the animal’s age. An animal already vaccinated must be current
Antibody testingNone. Nothing to send out of the country and nothing to wait on
CertificateNo Chile specific CFIA form exists. Chile is not on the CFIA list, so the Canadian International Health Certificate is used
Language of the certificateThe Spanish version is mandatory. An English or French certificate on its own will not clear
Deworming windowBroad spectrum, internal and external, between 5 and 30 days before the certificate is issued. Record the active ingredient, the dose and the date
Vet examinationInside the 10 days before the certificate is issued
How long the certificate lasts10 days from issue, extendable by up to 5 days depending on the journey
CFIA endorsementSet by the CFIA at the endorsement appointment
PermitNothing to lodge ahead of travel. The sanitary authorisation is dealt with on arrival, and SAG charges nothing for it
After you land10 days at the private address of destination, per SAG
FerretsA separate DIPROREN resolution authorising the import of exotic wildlife is needed on top of the certificate
Lead time in practice4 to 8 weeks where the rabies vaccination is current. The CFIA appointment is usually the limiting booking

Planning Timeline for a Canadian Move to Chile

Four to 8 weeks is realistic when the rabies vaccination is already valid. If your pet still needs a first shot, the 21 days it has to sit before entry go on top of that. Nothing here runs for months. The pinch point is not a waiting period, it is fitting the CFIA appointment inside a certificate that only lives 10 days.

How we sequence it:

  • First. Identification checked and the rabies record read. Vaccinate now if the current shot is not valid, because a first vaccination needs 21 days.
  • Next. Book the CFIA District Office appointment and settle the fee, at least 3 days before the slot. This date anchors everything else, because the certificate has to still be alive when you land.
  • Between 30 and 5 days before that certificate. The broad spectrum internal and external parasite treatment, with the product, the dose and the date written down.
  • Inside the 10 days before it. The clinical examination by a licensed Canadian veterinarian, and the certificate completed in Spanish as well as English or French.
  • The appointment. The CFIA official veterinarian endorses. The 10 day clock starts, with up to 5 more depending on the journey.
  • On arrival. Ten days at the address you gave SAG.

Will my pet be quarantined when it arrives in Chile?

No, and there is nothing to book. SAG asks for confinement at a private address instead: once in Chile, animals must remain in confinement at the private address of destination for a period of 10 days. Because the condition attaches to an address rather than to a city, the practical question is where you will actually be staying on the day you land.

What does Canada require to send my pet to Chile?

Chile is not on the CFIA’s list of countries with a negotiated export certificate, so there is no Chile form to obtain. The CFIA’s guidance for a destination with no prescribed format is to use the Canadian International Health Certificate where the destination’s requirements can be met with it. A licensed Canadian veterinarian completes it, and a CFIA official veterinarian endorses it by appointment.

Is there a rabies titre test on the Canada to Chile route?

No. Chile asks for no antibody titration at all, which is unusual for a long haul destination and is the main reason this route is measured in weeks rather than months. What it does ask is that a first rabies vaccination has 21 days behind it before your pet enters, whatever the animal’s age.

Does the certificate really have to be in Spanish?

Yes. SAG’s condition is that the certificate is issued in Spanish as well as in the official language of the country of origin. An English or French Canadian certificate on its own does not satisfy that, so the Spanish text has to be arranged before the endorsement appointment rather than afterwards.

When should my pet be dewormed for a move to Chile?

In the window between 5 and 30 days before the certificate is issued, using a broad spectrum product covering both internal and external parasites. Record the active ingredient, the dose and the date. The lower bound is the part worth flagging to your veterinarian, because most destinations set only an upper one.

How long does it take to move a pet from Canada to Chile?

Four to 8 weeks where the rabies vaccination is already current. The constraint is not a waiting period, it is scheduling: the CFIA appointment and the veterinary work all have to fit inside a certificate that is valid for 10 days, with up to 5 more depending on the journey.

How much does it cost to move a pet from Canada to Chile?

It turns on your animal’s size and crate, the two airports, whether it travels in cabin, as checked baggage or as cargo, and how much veterinary work the file still needs. Chile is light on official charges, since there is no permit to buy and no laboratory work to pay for. Send us the route, the breed and the weight and we will quote it properly.

How does Pet Travel Advisors handle a Canada to Chile move?

We start from the endorsement appointment and work backwards, because the certificate is only alive for 10 days and everything has to fit inside that. We read the rabies record, schedule the deworming so it lands neither too early nor too late, book the examination inside the 10 days before issue, and make sure the Spanish text and the identification number are both right before the CFIA sees the file. We also raise the confinement at your destination address early, since it shapes where you can stay when you land.
