Nearest Airport In Winnipeg With Pet Services:

Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport (YWG) Overview: Location: Winnipeg, Manitoba, about 7 km from downtown Winnipeg. Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport provides a range of services and facilities to ensure the safety, comfort, and well-being of pets travelling both within Canada and internationally.

  • Pet Relief Areas:

YWG offers two main pet relief areas, one outside the terminal near arrivals and another in the boarding area after security for departing pets. These areas provide waste disposal stations, water stations, and comfortable, safe areas for pets to relax before travel.

  • Who actually handles your pet at YWG

Air Canada Cargo runs the AC Animals product out of 2019 Sargent Avenue, Unit 10. The station runs every day, 07:00 to 17:30. Winnipeg is also one of the airports where cold-weather embargoes close hold travel for days at a time, so a winter booking needs slack in the schedule. The tender window is narrow: an animal must be tendered no later than three hours before departure and no earlier than four, so it is a one-hour slot rather than a morning. Air Canada does not offer door to door for animals, so somebody has to take the crate to the counter and somebody has to collect it. Bookings inside Canada go direct to Air Canada at least 24 hours ahead; bookings to the United States or overseas have to be placed through a registered IPATA, IATA or ATA agent rather than by the owner. On the paperwork side the CFIA endorsement is in person and by appointment, there are no walk-ins, and the fee is calculated when you book and paid by card at least three days before the appointment, which is why we book that appointment against the flight rather than the move date.

  • CFIA endorsement and where cargo animals are handled:

There is no separate animal reception centre at this airport. Animals travelling as cargo are dropped off and collected at the cargo handler building, not at the passenger terminals. On the export side, CFIA endorsement of a pet export certificate is by appointment only. Walk-ins are not accepted, the fee is calculated by a CFIA officer, and it has to be paid online at least 3 days before the appointment. It is non-refundable.

  • Temperature limits and ground handling:

Airlines decide whether a pet flies, not the airport. Carriers refuse an animal in the hold when forecast ground temperatures fall outside their published limits, and they layer seasonal embargoes on top of that. Air Canada Cargo also requires a comfort stop when a connection runs longer than 6 hours, or when an animal is not collected within 4 hours of arrival: the animal goes to a kennel or a veterinary service and those fees fall to the shipper. Between drop-off and loading your pet waits in the cargo handler building rather than a dedicated animal terminal, so the acceptance window and the handler opening hours are what a travel date has to be built around.

Additional Services:

  • Specialized Animal Cargo Facilities:
YWG offers specialized handling services through cargo facilities for large animals and exotic species. Staff members are trained to handle various animal needs for longer journeys.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can pets still fly out of Winnipeg in winter?

Winter is the main scheduling factor for Winnipeg moves. When temperatures drop, airlines apply cold-weather limits and may hold animals from cargo on the coldest days. We plan around it by choosing milder travel windows and midday departures from YWG, and by routing through warmer connections when the forecast calls for it, so your pet travels safely.

Will my pet fly out of YWG?

Most Winnipeg-area pets depart from Winnipeg Richardson International (YWG), the main airport for the area. When it does not have the right routing for your dates, we plan around a larger Canadian hub to keep the journey short. We handle the check-in timing and the airline’s crate and booking rules so the airport day stays calm and predictable.

Can you ship a pet overseas from Winnipeg?

Yes. Winnipeg has limited direct international service, so many overseas moves connect through a larger Canadian hub. We plan the full route from your Winnipeg pickup, prepare the destination’s import paperwork and the CFIA export endorsement, and keep the timing tight. See our destination guides.

Do you offer door-to-door pet transport from Winnipeg?

Yes. Many Winnipeg families want the whole move handled, so we can arrange ground pickup from your home, the airport hand-off, and delivery at the other end. One coordinator stays with the journey from your Winnipeg door to the destination.

Do you offer a pet taxi service within Winnipeg?

We are not an on-demand pet taxi, but we do arrange scheduled ground transport within Winnipeg and across Manitoba as part of a full move: pickup at your door, a secure crate for the ride, and drop off at YWG or your new address. If your pet needs a ride to the airport as part of a relocation we manage, that leg is built into the plan.

What parts of the Winnipeg area do you pick up from?

We arrange pickups across Winnipeg and nearby communities like St. Vital, Transcona, Headingley, and we coordinate pet moves throughout the Prairies and the rest of Canada through our service areas. We also coordinate moves in nearby Regina and Saskatoon.

How is the cost of a Winnipeg pet move decided?

Every Winnipeg move is priced on its own, because the route, airline fees, your pet’s size and crate, the season, and the destination’s rules all change the total. Tell us where and when, and we’ll put together an estimate: request a quote. For a closer look at what drives the price, see our guide to pet shipping costs in Canada.
